We’re proud to celebrate Abbie and Glen Warren, longtime volunteers with A Safe Place, who have been recognized as 2025 Volunteer Citizens of the Year by Direct Energy.
Since 2009, Abbie and Glen have been a steady presence in our Sherwood Park shelter, preparing meals, sorting donations, and assembling care bags for women and children escaping domestic violence. Their compassion and dedication have touched countless lives.
Married for over 52 years, Abbie and Glen now volunteer with us three to four times a week. Whether they are picking up donations, organizing groceries, preparing food, or quietly lending a hand wherever it’s needed, their commitment has made them an irreplaceable part of the A Safe Place family.
The Volunteer Citizen of the Year Award is presented by Direct Energy in partnership with the Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association (AWNA), and recognizes Albertans who go above and beyond to strengthen their communities. As part of this honour, a $5,000 donation has been made to A Safe Place on Abbie and Glen’s behalf, furthering their legacy of care by helping support women and children on their path to safety.
We’re thrilled to see their incredible work acknowledged through this well-deserved recognition, and we are deeply grateful to Direct Energy and AWNA for shining a light on the impact of everyday volunteers like Abbie and Glen.
