For 40 years, A Safe Place has been a sanctuary of hope, sheltering and supporting over 25,300 women and children escaping domestic abuse and violence.

To honor this milestone, we’ve launched 40 for 40, a year-long initiative featuring 40 community engagement events aimed at fostering stronger connections and raising awareness about the critical issues surrounding domestic violence. Through these events, we aim to bring together diverse voices to highlight shared values of support, empowerment, and collaboration.

“These events will shine a light on the services we provide and encourage open dialogue within the community. It’s about breaking the silence and showing people that we’re here to help,” says Karen Kadatz, Executive Director of A Safe Place.

The campaign kicked off in October with the proclamation of November as Alberta’s Family Violence Prevention Month by Mayor Rod Frank. The remaining 39 events will include public and private training sessions, informational workshops, and other opportunities to engage with the community through October 2025.

“This initiative is about building knowledge within our community—helping more people understand what we do and how we support those navigating violence,” shares Cortney Lohnes, Director of Shelter Services.

Stay tuned for updates and event announcements, and join us as we continue to make a difference. Together, we can build a stronger, more compassionate community.
